The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is developed, including a substantial array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
